How Often Do You Replace Your Shoes?

I am about to be considering a new pair of walking shoes. I realized that the shoes I am walking in now are bordering on ancient, and not giving the support I need to walk long distances. I did a…Continue

Sketchers ShapeUps Product Review

Looking for a new walking shoe, I was intrigued by the concept of the Reebok Easytones. At $120, though, this bargain-shoe-shopper balked and thought, "Maybe not..."

However, I could not get over my initial draw to a shoe that would help make the benefits of walking more of a systemic thing. The adds for AviaSport, Sketcher, and Reebok versions of this same shoe claim whole body toning, improved circulation, and improved posture. I was skeptical, but definitely intrigued. I did a… Continue

The Lipid Lie

I made a switch recently for my husband's health and my own that shocks most people. I added more saturated fats to our diet.

The result, I will tell you before I get to the why of it, has been positive. My husband has shown gradual but consistent weight loss just since making this switch (with all the hormonal changes involved in being pregnant and now being no longer pregnant, mine has been more up and down of late, even with the walking; and I am told by other women who've had… Continue

Getting Ready For Thanksgiving

I have a short week at work this week (My normal half day on Wed, then Thurs and Fri off), and I find I am halfway disappointed about that. While I am excited for the time off, I am already thinking, "OK, so what can I be doing to keep walking while I'm not at work?" I am looking at squeezing some exercise time into our schedule already (and excited about actually wanting to make the effort).

So, the husband and I will have to plan some long long walks with our dog (who will be… Continue

Sad News Regarding Our Pregnancy

My husband and I learned Friday that we had lost the baby we were so excited about bringing into the world. It has been a really trying weekend/week, but we can definitely feel the love, support, and prayers of our many friends and family members; and that has been a huge blessing in the midst of it. So, while taking time to grieve together and getting back into the swing of things at work after a few days away, my goals on the treadmill have been recalibrated and we are back at square one.… Continue

Hi Melody,

Yes, I did get into it pretty quickly, but I also am a Nordic Walker, too, so the walking isn't unfamiliar. However, my knees and feet are tired at the end of a 6 hour stint, I tell ya! So, I sit a bit later in the day, in the evenings often, for another couple of hours of work. I've got my own business as a designer-illustrator, so I do lots of standing, go to meetings, etc. so I'm not on the treadmill for more than 3 hours at a time, most days.

I wanted to also express my sympathies on the loss of your baby, too. That occurred to me before my wonderful daughter was born, and in many long talks with my midwife, she was very reassuring and left me much comforted. She said that there is a high incidence of spontaneous miscarriage for babies that wouldn't develop properly in utero, and many times we don't even know this has occurred.

I wish for a you a very healthy happy baby when the time is even more right for the child and you two!

Hey Mel,

I haven't been in a car accident in years, but part of my decision to get a tread was the neck and back pain I was getting which has pretty much vanished... Lovin' it. Today I had to be running around and was barely able to make 10 miles. Tomorrow I'm shootin' for 12! Keep on walkin'. —D

Melody,
You had left a message on my board about our dog. That's my girl Bonnie. She's a brindled greyhound. We adopted her a few years ago from GPA Nashville. Her official racing name was Crazy Bonnie Blue. Greyhounds have many different color varieties, but the main ones are white, black, spotted, brindled, and brown. Our other hounds are both black males. They make great companions (low energy, good health, good behavior) and I highly recommend finding a local adoption agency if you're interested.

Hey Mel,

I've been rockin' pretty hard. Last week did over 10 for all 5 days at work and hit 11 twice. This week is mixed but I did 13 on Monday and a little under 10 yesterday (had to leave for gig in city). The 13 was a new high.. today I think I'll break 10. One thing I do notice, besides being slightly thinner (though today i bailed on the diet and ate 3 cookies at lunch!) is that I'm sleeping WAY better, waking up way less at night. You notice that at all? Anyhoo, back to work...

Yeah the one bummer about the treadesk I brought is no incline. But I still love it... I'm worried about spring, right now I'm keeping my office so cool, but in spring I have a feeling I'm going to be melting a lot... we'll see!

Just make sure to wear a lot of lighter, cooler clothing. Actually, the fan on my treadmill is so ridiculously noisy that I am looking at getting a clip on fan of sorts to attach to my set up. I've googled around for one, now I just need to figure out which one is the best buy for the least money.
