Now I wish I had documented the disassembly of the control panel from the console! Here's where I'm certain. By taking the screws out of the back of the console, the control panel comes right out. Don't be shy about taking it apart---I don't see how you could hurt it if you're at all careful.

Then the fuzzy part: the wires are loose behind the front panel, held down with big gobs of glue. I removed the little speakers and the fan, and snipped the connections to them. I tied off the loose ends with electrical tape to prevent shorts.

Then I attached the control panel to a desk organizer I had lying around (cannot remember the brand), using the original screws. It's crude but it works.
