Newbie here, hot to trot...need to choose treadmill
9 Replies

Howdy, folks! This is my first post... I've just recently gotten it into my head that a treadmill desk is going to save me. I got a job working online from home about 3 years ago, and even though I…Continue

"I got a NordicTrack ZS from Costco for $800 and it has served me very well for over five years now. If you don't want to spend much, go on eBay and buy one for cheap from someone who never used it. Then buy an 18"X60" wooden board and…"

"I am SO happy I set up a treadmill desk! I work for an hour or  so and then hop off if I feel like it. When I need to do some delicate mousework, I'll stand on the sides for a few minutes then step back on the moving belt. I walk at least…"

"Hi, I am really interested in hearing your experience now that you're about three months in, as I am trying to decide whether to switch to treadmill or not. Did you switch all at once, do part-chair and part treadmill, how many hours a day are…"

Making progress with the set-up

What is it with carpenters and other construction guys?? You give them a simple task like, "Cut down this tabletop", and they disappear for weeks.  Sigh.Well, I have been making do with my shelf resting on the handrails. I've raised the level of the keyboard and mousing surface with books, and that is good for posture and shoulders. And just yesterday I affixed the large monitor to a swingarm (off of Amazon for $30 or so). This brings the monitor to head level and also closer (the right…See More

"Good to know! Always great to hear positive reports on treadmills. Or, alternatively, caution on some models. So much to learn, so many miles to walk. "

"I am quite pleased with the Yowza Osprey. It is very heavy and seems well-built. Quiet enough for me, and while I am in a home office, so I don't have to worry about fellow cubicle-people, I do hate noise and it is just fine. Because I am at…"

2 weeks and 2 pounds down

Last week I walked a total of about 32 miles in six days, so that is averaging more than 5mi a day. I have started increasing the incline a bit. Not so much that I notice it, but the calorie counter eats more calories that way. I have no idea if the calories counter is accurate, but it doesn't really matter, since I'm only really keeping an eye on mileage and that just for self-encouragement.I still haven't got the table top cut. It is a formica-ed piece of very heavy particle board, and we…See More

"This ministepper -- does it rely on your efforts or is it motorized? Because the thing that a treadmill does it makes you move. You don't make it move. So in a very short time, you don't even notice that you are walking. It is a…"

More first thoughts...

I've worked my first 6 days using the treadmill. An hour at a time, a few times a day, as I feel inclined. I'm not trying to walk virtually to anywhere, nor max out calories burned or rack up pulse rates. But it is gratifying to be able to say, "I walked 4 miles today".Still haven't got the keyboard shelf on its own supports, but I'm making do with the slightly vibrating wire shelf. I do wish I were better at touch typing, but then, in my job, I also have to switch back and forth between…See More

First thoughts...

No pictures yet, because I haven't got my set-up the way I like it yet, just making do for the timebeing. At present, I have a couple of pieces of foam pipe insulation on the side handles, and then a wire shelf sitting on those. My laptop sits on that, cushioned by a fleece scarf which I fold over the edge of the laptop. This allows my wrists to slide a bit as I walk, but my fingers remain stable on the keys. There is vibration/movement from the treadmill, but it is workable. However, I'm going…See More

About Me:
I work from home and gained weight for the first time in my life, so I know sedentariness is the culprit. BUT I have to be at this computer for many hours a day, so a treadmill desk sounds like the way to go.
