My first day as an "office walker"

I was so excited to start working at my new treadmill desk station this morning!  I started out with a challenge for myself - I wanted to walk 8 miles the first day.  

 

I began the day by setting the speed at 2 miles per hour while I read through some emails (no typing necessary during this time).  I quickly realized I was going to wear myself out at that speed, so I slowed down and tried a variety of speeds.  I found that 1.4 MPH was about the best, even though not as fast as I wanted to go.

 

My treadmill has a USB port and came with a flash drive.  I set up my account with LifeSpan and figured out how to sync the data, which I can do once a day or once a week or whenever I want.  For me, this is important.  I need to track my progress so I can challenge myself to do more and feel that I've been successful over time.

 

At the end of the day I didn't quite reach my goal.  I logged just over 6 miles.  I guess I could push myself to finish the last 2 tonight, but I might give myself a break.  It was my first day after all.  Tomorrow is a new day and a new chance to hit the 8 mile goal.  And, I'm tired!  I think I will sleep well tonight!

The lifespan thing sounds neat to track progress - I use Dailymile.com to record my treadmill walking and other exercise.

Dailymile.com looks cool. How do you upload your workouts? Or do you enter them manually?

I enter them manually - if you sign up, let me know & we can be "friends" on there and follow each other's workouts...

Okay, I'm on there now.  I figured out how to upload all of my old workouts from Nike+ (from when I had time to run!) and then I manually entered today and yesterday. I don't know how to find someone else on there. Can you find me or do I need to send you something?

Congrats, and welcome to the club! I've been tracking my results on my treadmill desk blog, and I've found that 2 mph is certainly doable, but it takes a little getting used to first. I'm down 7 pounds after 24 days of walking without changing my diet at all.

 

I don't think you should push yourself too hard at first, though. It's easy to cause damage to your feet or joints if you go from 0 to 10 miles per day right away. Remember that most people can't do a half-marathon without some practice, so slow and steady is really the way to get results for the long term. Don't burn yourself out, but stick to it!

Thanks Jason!  I'm in my fourth week and have lost 5 pounds (also without changing my diet).  I'm hoping to keep up the momentum.  I really pushed hard the first couple weeks and wore myself out, but have now adapted to it and can pretty easily do 6-9 miles per day.  I maybe should have started out a little easier on myself, but oh, well. :)
