Working @ 100 Calories Per Hour

bdrhoa

Is working @ 100 cals/hr enough?

Mitch Wager made this point in his blog:

"Because 1 mph doesn't speed up the metabolism a whole lot, the treadmill desk wouldn't be a substitute for a good workout. . ."

I wonder if he's right.

But isn't this the whole point of Dr. Levine's research at the Mayo Clinic? He says that burning 100 calories more per hour will increase your metabolism. Oh, I just saw your reply to that blog post and you said basically the same thing.

The way I'm viewing it is that I am burning X number of calories more than I did before when I sat on my couch to work. My husband has told me the same thing, "But you're not doing cardio". Well, that's too bad, but I am doing *something* and that is way more important to me at this point. And, now that I have been walking and working for a month, I am generally doing 2mph and I can ramp that up to 3 or 3.5mph for half an hour at a time which does give me the cardio I need. So I think the 1mph is a great place to start and if you want the cardio, it's easier to add after you've been going slow for a while.

Levines study actually said that thin people are thin because they are up and moving on average 2.5 hours more per day. This translates to weight loss of approximately 36 lbs a year! The rest of us keep packing it on year to year apparently.

As for needing a "tougher work-out" than walking at 1 mph. I am pasting in an article I found at www.trekdesk.com. They offer a very interesting treadmill desk and exercise chair that I can't wait to get my hands on.
Moderate exercise benefits the heart: You don't have to feel the burn. Just 30 minutes a day of walking brings as much risk reduction for heart attack as a high-intensity exercise program, according to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 1999.

Surprisingly, aerobic fitness can also be increased by frequent moderate exercise such as walking according to a study published in the November 2005 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Consistency is the key. Regular use of TrekDesk promotes these life changing health habits and keeps you on track for optimum health."

There are a lot more articles and I am amazed at what great health benefits can be acquired by merely walking more during our days.
